Obstetrics and Gynaecology

All the jobs are three months gynaecology, three months obstetrics.
The Obstetrics Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital is a busy unit with about 5,000 deliveries a year. The post offers excellent obstetric experience and most registrars take and pass the DRCOG. The Gynaecology posts offer good emergency experience in gynaecology as well as out-patient experience. Registrars should expect to do D & Cs and ERPCs and are also expected to provide pre and post-operative care for terminations. You could attend a family planning course during study leave. The on-call rota is 1 in 4 in gynae. and 1 in 5 in obstetrics (to be confirmed).
Paediatrics
Consultants: Dr Newman, Dr Boon, Dr Mann, Dr Edees, and Dr Kumar
Dr Stewart Dr Gordon,Dr Madasseri, Dr Boden& Dr McCrae
This is a general paediatric post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital providing good experience of common paediatric problems. A clinic week is rostered in every few weeks giving you the opportunity to attend specialist outpatient clinics and to gain experience in aspects of community paediatrics and learning disability. The on-call rota is a 1 in 5 with a day off afterwards with a view to changing to a shift in 2002.
All registrars appointed to the scheme will be asked to give permission for the Police to be approached to check for any criminal convictions in accordance with the terms of DHSS Circular HC (88) 9 - "Protection of Children: Disclosure of Criminal Background of those with Access to Children".
General Medicine: Scheme I
Consultants: Dr Bell, Dr Orr, Dr Spyrou & Dr Mckenna (Cardiology)
This is a busy general medical post with a cardiological bias. It provides extensive experience in all common medical conditions seen in the hospital and a certain amount of experience in rehabilitation. So far as the cardiology is concerned the SHOs, of whom there are two, one at any time being on the GP scheme, attend and see new patients under supervision. The cardiac service has all non-invasive facilities and permanent pacemaker implantations. The rota is a full shift system.
General Medicine: Scheme II
Consultants: Dr Simpson , Dr. Elsheikh:
This medical post provides experience in all aspects of General Medicine and may include some dermatology. There is supervised outpatient experience in General Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes, including specialist diabetic foot, retinopathy and ante-natal clinics. There is a Career Grade Registrar on the Firm. The on-call rota is a full shift system.
Rheumatology: Scheme III
Consultant: Dr Bradlow , Dr McNally, Dr Young: This post provides excellent experience in general medicine as well as rheumatology. The trainees share an on-call rota with the Elderly Care SHO and cover their wards and admissions when on call. There will be an opportunity to learn joint injection techniques which all GPs need to get on to the minor surgery list. Teaching is an important part of the team philosophy and there is protected time for it. The on-call is as the Medical rota.
Psychiatry
Consultants: Dr Farouk Ahmed
The post is in general adult psychiatry, and based at Prospect Park Hospital. Some outpatient work is included based in clinics in Reading. In addition, there are opportunities to gain some experience in psycho-geriatrics, liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy and child and adolescent psychiatry. SHOs are expected to take part in the Thursday afternoon teaching programme together with psychiatry trainees, and the teaching commitment is strongly supported by the consultants as a whole. The on-call is 1:7
Casualty
Consultants: Accident and Emergency - Mr Soysa, Miss Dudek, Mr Blyth, Mr Reddy
Accident and Emergency at the Royal Berkshire Hospital is the major trauma unit in West Berkshire and handles all emergencies coming into the hospitals in the district. The Department is run under the supervision of three A & E consultants and there are six SHOs in post. A wide experience in A & E medicine is provided for the junior staff and minor surgical techniques are taught in the department by the consultants. There is also an overnight stay unit of nine beds and these beds are mainly used at present for minor head injuries and other forms of minor trauma. There are formal teaching sessions once a month as well as plenty of on-the-spot teaching from the enthusiastic senior team. You will gain experience of audit in the department, and the on-call is a full shift rota.Opportunities for Advanced Life Support and Paediatric Life Support training occur while in the Department. The on-call is a full shift rota of 42 hours per week.
