Study leave in GP jobs
Study leave funding in GP jobs is managed by the Deanery. You are currently able to apply for -£600 educational allowance (pro rata per year). This is the same for all GP specialty trainees whether you are an ST1, ST2, ST3, ST4 or academic GP registrar.
You can apply for a maximum of 30 days study leave pro rata per year, minus your protected VTS training time which is 12 days a year (or 6 per 6 months) for ST1 and 2. This means that a typical full time ST1 or 2 in general practice can apply for up to 9 days personal study leave in a 6 month GP placement. ST3s have 50 days study leave already accounted for by your Tuesday day release- well above the 30 days entitlement! It has also been agreed that you may apply for an additional 5 days personal study leave from practice in your ST3 year at the discretion of your trainer.
As in hospital jobs, applications for study leave should be based on a personal development plan, and should be negotiated with the GP Trainer to minimise impact on patient care. You should make your application using the form below and return to Julie-Ann McKhee at the Oxford Deanery, with the signed approval of both your GP Trainer and programme director. The deanery's criteria for approval of study leave are as follows:
-
The study should be appropriate for the ultimate career goal of the applicant
-
The study should be based on a specific learning need identified in the personal development plan
-
The study method is appropriate to the need identified
-
The study method is suitable for the particular applicant
-
The proposed study is appropriate at this stage of training
-
Funding will not normally be provided for a course which is otherwise provided as part of the regular Deanery training programme
-
Higher priority will be given to activities agreed by GP Programme Directors as essential for completion of GP training, than to activities identified by programme directors as desirable for development of special interests relevant for general practice.
