Thinking of Becoming a Trainer?

In general, in order to become a trainer you will need:
- GP experience 3yrs post CCT
- Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Teaching or equivalent (we can help you to obtain this)
- Your practice to comply with Oxford deanery's training practice criteria eg. regarding notes summarisation. You will personally need to be approved as a trainer, and your practice as a learning environment by means of an assesment visit. Information regarding this and the necessary forms can be found here on the deanery's website under "New Trainers"
- Attendance at trainers meetings. You must attend for 6 months prior to application. To arrange this contact the programme directors at reading.vts@royalberksire.nhs.uk
Trainer ongoing commitment/assessment
Once approved as a trainer your ongoing commitments will be:

Approximately bimonthly trainers meetings/business meetings- 90 minutes at lunchtime, held at the RBH postgrad centre

Sub Groups (6 per year) - 3 after business meetings and 3 separate (approx 2 hrs after business meeting 1 hour others)

Hospital job liaison meetings with consultants and clinical supervisors quarterly 2 hours. Attend one yearly ideally.

Educational supervision - 5 half days per year for each ST3 and 2 for each ST1 or 2
- Deanery Study Days- usually 2 per year, expectation to attend 1
- Regional VTS Study Days - 2 days per year, spring and autumn
- Teaching at the VTS day release programme- 4 half days per year including participation in the CSA practice day
- Mid term assessments for your own and 1 other ST3 trainee - 2 half days per year
- Other Practices' reaccreditation visits - 1-2 days per year
- Practice visit/reassessment- 2 years after first accreditation then 3 yearly
- Selection / Interview (optional at present)
